Habet - Immersive MedTech Platform
Habet is an immersive medtech platform that connects people in addiction recovery with certified practitioners and peers inside a massively multiplayer virtual world. I was responsible for the entire immersive layer, from Unity development and multiplayer networking to environment art and world design.
The Challenge
Traditional telehealth tools for addiction recovery are limited to flat video calls, which fail to create the sense of presence, safety, and community that recovery demands. Habet's vision was to build a fully realized virtual world where patients could walk into a practitioner's office, attend group sessions in an auditorium, or simply exist in a calming shared space, all without leaving home.
The technical challenge was significant: deliver a real-time multiplayer 3D experience with multiple distinct environments, seamless networking, and the visual quality needed to make users feel genuinely present.
My Role
- Lead Unity Developer: sole developer on the immersive layer
- Environment Artist: designed and built all 3D environments
- Technical Artist: lighting, shaders, and performance optimization
- Collaborated directly with the founder and backend team
What I Built
Multiplayer Virtual World
Built the full client-side application in Unity using Mirror for real-time multiplayer networking and GameSparks for backend services (matchmaking, session management, user data). Players could move through the world as avatars, enter different zones, and interact with practitioners and peers in real time.
Environment Art & World Design
Designed and modeled the entire virtual world from scratch, including:
- Habet City: an open-world hub connecting all areas, with modular architecture and a central spire landmark
- The Auditorium: a large-scale venue for group sessions and presentations
- The Social Hub: a relaxed gathering space for peer-to-peer interaction
- Practitioner Rooms: private, enclosed environments for one-on-one therapy sessions
Each environment was designed to feel calming and purposeful: warm lighting, organic shapes, and deliberate spatial design to support therapeutic outcomes.
Performance & Polish
Optimized all environments for smooth real-time rendering across a range of hardware. Handled lighting bakes, LOD setup, texture atlasing, and shader tuning to maintain visual fidelity at stable frame rates.
Impact
Habet shipped as a functional multiplayer platform where real practitioners conducted recovery sessions with real patients in a virtual world. The immersive approach offered something flat video calls could not: a sense of place, community, and presence that supported the therapeutic process. The project spanned over 600 hours of development and art production.
